In the midst of COVID-19
How the girls in Ongata Rongai study during school closure.
Less time collecting water means more time in class. Clean water and proper toilets at school mean teenage girls don’t have to stay home for a week out of every month.
The COVID-19 breakout has been a scary experience, in between schedules completely changing and new habits to be adapted to. During this time, I have had the pleasure of spending every weekday morning with Monica (class 7) and Monica (class 4) both staying at the Pangani Lutheran Children’s Center. Our aim is to use this time wisely to broaden their understanding of topics that they had covered in school and continue with the syllabus, covering what they had not.
Our daily activities include learning and doing exercises, two subjects daily, lessons start at 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. We dedicate one and a half hours to each subject. Each of the students has a twenty minutes program that airs on the television daily based on different topics and subjects therefore adding to the diverse forms of learning. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we gather all the children from Rose’s and Mum Tabitha’s class and we watch educative and entertaining movies and animations. This gives the children something to look forward to.
I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason and we are always where we are supposed to be. During these trying times, I can’t help but thank God for this gift, the opportunity to spend time and learn with the kids at PLCC. I am looking forward to learning more from them and spending quality time.
