Rescue/Drop-in Centre Pangani House

To put our objectives in practice we operate at two locations: the rescue / drop-in centre Pangani House and the children's home in Ongata Rongai.
Pangani House is the centre in Nairobi town located in the Pangani estate close to Juja Rd.

For many years we have been working at Pangani House which provided shelter for 24 girls until December 2011. Since January 2012 when we were able to transfer some girls to the home in Ongata Rongai the use of Pangani House has changed. Girls, who have been staying in Pangani House and are in primary school standard 7and 8, live here to finish their primary school education.

Easily accessible, Pangani House serves as the first contact place to the new intake, rehabilitation and meetings with parents.
PLCC takes in 10 new girls annually. The PLCC social workers visit the streets of Nairobi to identify girls aged between 5 and 12 years old. They patronize particular areas identified with street families and be friend the girls. After being closer to them, the follow ups are done to establish the girls' particulars and origin i.e. home district or village. Subsequent visits to the girl's family, case study reports are written, and then the admission forms are filled.
The rehabilitation program takes a period of one year. Medical check ups, informal education, teaching tasks about daily life and improving the social behaviour are compulsory. At the end of the year the girls do an examination to evaluate which classes they join in public schools.
Meanwhile whatever condition is observed from the girls' homes in the street or in the slums of Mathare, Korogocho, Dandora, Mukuru kwa Njenga, which the Centre is able to attend to, then PLCC chips in. Counselling services are offered to both girl(s) and parent/guardian.

Time and again cases of emergency need for shelter are acted upon quickly without going through long procedures of intake. Pangani House is the place where this is done, sometimes for a short time to evaluate the future place for the particular child.
